Description

This eight-hour course will familiarize the student with the basic handling of the baton. This course is required to be completed prior to submitting an Initial Baton Permit application to the BSIS and also required to be completed within 6 months of the permits expiration date and prior to submitting a renewal application.  Starting January 1, 2024, baton permits will be valid for two years and require renewing just like the Guard Card and Exposed Firearm permit. For all Baton permits issued prior to 12/31/2023, visit the BSIS website for important information on when your permit will expire (it is based on your issue month and year).

This course covers the defensive tactics, jabs, and strikes to be used when carrying a baton. The course combines lecture, discussion, demonstration, and practical application of techniques.

Training will be with the four styles of baton.

  • Straight (non expandable)
  • Straight (expandable)
  • Side-Handle (non expandable)
  • Side-Handle (expandable)

Upon successful completion of course, the student will be given a certificate of completion for their records and an instructor certification to be submitted with the application to the BSIS. Students may not possess or carry a baton until they have a valid Guard Card and Baton Permit issued by BSIS in their possession.

The cost of the Initial Baton application is $60 and the renewal application is $40 (every two years) paid to the BSIS, not SAFTA.
