Security Officer Exposed Firearm Course

This 16-hour course is approved by the California State Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. It is designed to give the security officer an awareness of the legal and moral aspects of the use of firearms while carrying a handgun as a licensed security officer.

There is a non-refundable fee of $15.  If you cannot make the course, please call or email to reschedule prior to the course.  If you do not show up and request a refund after the course, we will retain the $15.

Description

This course includes classroom instruction, shoot-no-shoot scenarios, as well as practical application on the shooting range. This course not only covers target shooting, but we also include tactical combat and instinct shooting.

Cost covers one caliber, each additional caliber is $10.  Weapons available to rent for $5. (These fees will be collected the day of the course).

The applicant will be responsible for submitting an application to the BSIS at a cost of $100.00. SAFTA instructors will assist you with filling out the application on day one.

The applicant must also submit a LiveScan fingerprint background check along with the application at an additional cost, which varies based on location the Live Scan is completed.

Note: There will be a savings if you plan to complete the LiveScan for both Guard Card and Firearms at the same time.

As of 1 July 2018, all initial Exposed Firearm Applicants will be required to complete an assessment. This assessment will be used to determine if the applicant displays the appropriate judgement, restraint and self-control needed to carry a firearm in the course of their duties.  This needs to be completed prior to submitting the application to the BSIS.  Please visit the BSIS website for further information

NOTE: SAFTA is not responsible for the denial of applications due to criminal backgrounds or failed assessments and denial is not cause for a refund of training.

The state requires students taking this course at SAFTA, or any other firearms training facility, to provide the school with documentation of United States citizenship and/or legal residency. This includes one of the following:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • INS alien resident status
  • Military DD214 (discharge honorable)
  • Military I.D.

State law mandates that individuals taking this specific firearms course to be at least 21 Years of age (at time of application), free of felony convictions and violent misdemeanors, as well as narcotics crimes and weapons charges. The applicant should discuss any convictions with a SAFTA instructor prior to enrolling in any weapons courses
